Social Media Image Size Guide 2018

What are the best image sizes for uploading to social media? Should you upload everything in 4K or as high-definition as possible? You used the latest equipment, the best creatives and made a masterpiece but uploaded it to social media but it somehow looked average. If that scenario sounds familiar, it's because Facebook or Instagram resized your images for you. Counter-intuitively, the answer is no - you shouldn't always upload the highest resolution image you have and it's because Facebook and Instagram want to make your images worse.

Learn why and see how to get the best imagery in your social media channels here with our image size upload guide.

The likes of Facebook and Instagram are powerful tools to grow your business. There are over 95 million posts to Instagram every day from over 800 million users and over 60 billion posts uploaded in total. It's a huge amount of data and over 80% of the screens used to consume the content are mobile phone screens. For example, an Apple iPhone displays 750w x 1334h. This means larger content needs to be down-sized to be viewed on phone. But, don't leave it for Facebook or Instagram to resize your content. Photo or video editing software such as Apple's Final Cut Pro X,  PhaseOne's Capture One Pro, Adobe's Photoshop, Lightroom or Premiere Pro will all do the trick whilst maintaining as much image data as possible when resizing your content.

Note the comparative loss of detail and sharpness in our example above. The same video was uploaded to Instagram at 4k (left 2 images) and again at a lower HD resolution (right 2 images). Despite containing more image data, the higher resolution 4K video gets more compression and ends up displaying in less detail than the smaller file.

How to resize social media images the easy way.

When you work with us at Asset Factory, you can select all the correct file formats and export resolutions so the content reaches the right channels in the ideal size and type without any extra effort. Otherwise, one handy hint we can let slip is to use Adobe Photoshop and learn how to do automatic Batch Processing and create Actions. Batch processing will open, change and export files in a folder destination. Actions are the set of saved sets of treatments that you record in sequence. Your resizing, colour adjustments, cropping etc can then be applied to folders of files without having to handle each one.

Until Facebook lets you upload a separate mobile cover picture, make sure your photo or video works in both the desktop and mobile format.

Poor compression is more noticeable for video than photos, but there's another tick to use when uploading directly from your phone rather than desktop in the Facebook App.

  • Tap the Hamburger Menu icon next to 'More' at the bottom of the screen
  • Scroll down the tap on Settings and select Account Settings

The maximum resolution for Instagram stories video is 1080x1920, the minimum is 750 x 1334 coincidentally the same resolution as the Apple iPhone 8. Don't forget to consider how your image renders as a square thumbnail also.
